Cleaning toilet can gross out anyone! The toxic chemicals and that awful smell and let me make it a little nastier by mentioning that debris can make give you cramps in the stomach. Of course, the first thing that comes to mind is to buy a toilet cleaner from the store and get rid of all the gross stuff around and inside the bowl.
However, if you read the back of the bottle, they have some serious risk involved in using and storing these cleaners in the house.
I was quite surprised as well because I never read those before and decided to ditch them and go for some natural alternatives.
You may ask that, “how can a homemade toilet cleaner clean my toilet?”
While my purpose to write this guide isn’t to demotivate anyone from buying the commercial cleaners, still the mission is to help somehow you get rid of those chemical cleaners with dangerous toxins.
The ingredients and recipe I’ll be talking about today for making a homemade toilet cleaner works perfectly and will give you a sparkling toilet bowl in no time.
Before we jump to making the cleaner let us see the harmful components found in your regular cleaner.
According to Medline Plus, “The substances in these products that can be harmful are Detergents, Isopropyl Alcohol and Phenol.” These are potentially harmful.
Some cleaners have hydrochloric acid which is considered as an active ingredient but highly toxic and poisoning to children, pets and any family member who might have the chore of cleaning toilet. Also, chlorine bleach is added to it. Bleach is highly caustic and can burn, corrode and even destroy living tissues. Many cases of burning eyes, nose, and skin, have been seen over the years due to toilet cleaner.
So, let us be on the safe side and see how natural toilet cleaner can be made and how safe it can be for our lives.
Make your own Homemade Toilet Cleaner
There isn’t one! You can use several different ingredients to clean your toilet effectively and get rid of the smell and debris.
1: White Vinegar
Probably the best thing you can use for natural cleaning. Vinegar is mild acid, and it helps to disinfect, eliminate all the odor and best of all it is extremely safe to use.
Borax is different form boric acid. It is basically sodium tetraborate and is toxic as your regular table salt or the baking soda. It helps to deodorize and whiten the toilet bowl.
3: Lemon Juice
Lemon contains citric acid and it easily kills the germs, removes stains and deodorizes the toilet.
4: Essential Oils
After using lemon, you can use tea tree oil which boasts antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties. It helps to kill bacteria and will leave the toilet seat hygienic. You can also use citrus oil, peppermint oil, rosemary and eucalyptus oil.
5: Baking Soda
A great way of deodorizing the toilet bowl and killing the germs. It also prevents debris, stains and ugly rings that usually build up in the toilet seat.
Tea Tree Toilet Bowl Scrub
It uses antibacterial properties that kill germs and cleans the surface.
- Take ½ cup of baking soda.
- 1 cup of distilled white vinegar easily available at different stores.
- ½ teaspoon of tea tree essential oil.
Mix vinegar and essential oil in a spray bottle. Now spray it on the inside of the bowl, on the toilet seat, lid and handle and let is sit there for about 10-15 minutes. Now sprinkle the baking soda and scrub the inside of the bowl using a toilet brush.
Heavy Duty Toilet Formula
This one will help get rid of those stubborn and nasty rings and tough debris.
- ¾ cup of borax.
- One cup of white vinegar.
- Ten drops of lavender essential oil.
- 5 Drops of lemon essential oil.
Take a bowl or a squirt bottle and mix in all the ingredients. Swish the water around the toilet bowl using toilet brush or flush to wet the inside of it. Now pour the mixture into the bowl and allow it to sit there for several hours. Best time is the night time. Make sure no other family member uses that toilet. In the morning, scrub the bowl and flush the toilet.
